WILLIE DAVID PORTIS, age 69, of Cuba, Alabama, born to the late Henry and Essie Mae Campbell Portis, Sr., transitioned and entered into eternal rest at his residence November 1, 2018. Service of Remembrance is to be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 from Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 3862 Thompson 1, Cuba with Rev. Willie Harrison, pastor, officiating and Sister Linda Delaine serving as Mistress of Order. Interment follows in Mt. Zion Cemetery. After the committal service, repast is in the Fellowship Hall of Mt. Zion. Bro. Portis will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time. Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday evening (November 9th) from 3-6:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel. On Saturday morning, the processional leaves from the Portis Family residence at 10:30 a.m. Willie was the youngest of 8 children born to the union of Henry Portis Sr. and Essie Mae Portis on July 3, 1949. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Cuba, AL. He was a faithful member of his church; serving as an Usher and Trustee until his death on November 1, 2018. He was educated in the Alabama school system and attended Kinterbish High School in Cuba, AL. Class of 1967. He worked in construction most of his life. He specialized in brick masonry. He loved fishing, hunting and most of all farming. He was very passionate about gardening. He would nurture and watch his crops closely. He could tell you when the first blade of corn appeared on the corn stalk and when the first ice potatoes were ready to eat. He was a family man at heart, though he never married. He stayed close to home taking care of his mother until her death. Not having any children of his own, Willis developed a special and unique relationship with all his nieces and nephews, showing them all much love. He was proceeded in death by his father, Henry Portis Sr.; his mother, Essie Mae Campbell Portis; 2 brothers, Robert Earl Portis, Leroy Portis; 1 sister, Ora Nell Tanks.Those who remain to cherish his memories: 2 brothers, Henry (Louise) Portis of Detroit, Michigan, Jack (Shirley) Portis of Cuba, AL.; 2 sisters Susie L. Brooks of New Orleans, LA, Geneva (Alvan) Adams of Killeen, TX.; 2 sisters-in-law Arbiezean Portis of Desoto, TX, Lorean Portis of Meridian, MS.; a special caregiver and friend Michelle Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends.His homegoing leaves a huge hole, inside all our hearts, both family and friends too great to be filled.
