MATTIE GILES CHANEY, age 105, was born in Sumter County, Alabama February 17, 1918; the seventh child of the late John (Bunch) and Corine Ruffin Giles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Chaney Sr; three children - Lorene Chaney Sledge; Bob Chaney, Jr. and Eddie Chaney; two grandchildren and all of her siblings. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church on August 6, 1930 under the pastorate of Reverend A. C. Clay. She later moved her membership to Fourth Creek Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Edward DuBose. She served faithfully until her health began to fail. On June 9, 1940 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Bob Chaney and to this union were born nine children and she was the proud grandmother, great grandmother, great-great- grandmother, and great-great-great grandmother of many. After having lived a blessed life of Love and Longevity, she entered into eternal rest the early morning of Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation in York, Alabama. Service of Memory and Life Celebration is slated for Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 12:00 P.M. at Bethel Pine Missionary Baptist Church, 796 Sumter 22, Coatopa, Alabama 35470, with Pastor Mitchel Carter (4th Creek Baptist Church-York, AL) to deliver the eulogy, offering words of comfort and consolation; Deacon Marcus Campbell to serve as Master of Order and Sister LaToya Fluker, musician. Rev. Willie James Ivory is church pastor. Sister Chaney will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time. Interment is to follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, off of Highway 80, York, Alabama. Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday evening, May 5, 2023 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: four daughters - Sarah Watson, York, AL., Addie Bea Shelton, Chicago, Illinois, Dorothy Blakely, Cleveland, Ohio, Mildred (Joe) Jacobs, Wildwood, N.J., two sons, George (Ella) Chaney of Cleveland, Ohio, Willie (Carolyn) Chaney, Cape May Court House, NJ and one daughter-in-law, Karen Chaney, Sunbury, PA; (21) grandchildren - five that she raised, Ronald (Janice) Chaney, Bellamy, AL., Ray Chaney, Miami, AL., Loretta Carey, Cape May Court House, NJ., Jackie (Kenneth) Meeks, Livingston, AL., and Jamie (Kenneshia) Gaines of Hoover, AL; (37) Great-Grandchildren; (24) Great-Great Grandchildren; (2) Great-Great-Great Grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Cleveland Chaney of Cleveland, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous of friends who loved her and will miss her dearly.
