JAMES EVAN LARKIN, age 77, of York, Alabama, affectionately known by many as "Sonny" or "Cut Buddy" was born January 10, 1947 in Meridian; Lauderdale County, Mississippi, to the late Jessie and Minnie Vann Larkin. He peacefully transitioned to the will of God at his residence on Friday, March 29, 2024. Service of Remembrance and Life Celebration is slated for Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church, located 112 Curl Road, York, Alabama. Rev. Robert E. Pearce, Jr., pastor will deliver the eulogy offering words of comfort and consolation; with Deacon Gary Graves serving as Master of Order. Sonny will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time. Interment and service of committal follows with Military Honors in Elmwood Memorial Gardens, 11313 US Highway 11, also York, Alabama. After the committal, repast is in the Fellowship Hall of Eastern Star. Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday evening (April 5th) from 3-6:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel. On Saturday morning at 10:40, the processional will leave the Larkin Family residence for the church. Realizing that he needed a Savior, James joined the Eastern Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Moses Wimberly. He attended and graduated from York West End High School in 1965. After graduation he attended Alabama A&M University. Then he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served three years. After being discharged he served as radio dispatcher for the Alabama Highway Patrol Department in Selma, AL. Later he was hired as the manager of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Meridian, MS. Lastly, he was employed by James Rivers (Georgia Pacific) in Pennington, AL until he retired because of failing health. James Evan Larkin was joined in Holy Matrimony on September 9, 1970 to his wife of 54 years, Gloria Jean, whom he affectionately called "Jean". They have two sons, Varnardo (Terry) and Lance Alverez. Survivors cherishing his memory include: a loving, caring and devoted wife, Gloria Jean; two sons, Terry, Meridian, MS. and Lance (Connie) of Houston, Texas; one sister, Carolyn Larkin, Montgomery, AL; seven (7) grandchildren; nine (9) sisters-in-law, nine (9) brothers-in-law; five (5) extended brothers; several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends who will truly miss Sonny! To his wife Jean and the entire Larkin Family we at Weatherly Funeral Home offer to each of you our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy and condolences.
